Shipping companies

A flag captains sail under together — any calling, any mix. A shared board, a wire, a tag before every name, a home port, three contracts a fortnight. Nothing in it moves a ship faster.

How they work

Any captain can found one for $25,000 and pick what it calls itself: a Company (a shipping house, led by its founder), a Brethren (a brotherhood of the sea, led by its captain) or a Watch (a security outfit, led by its commander). The rules are the same; the word is the flavour. Up to 20 captains.

Open companies take anyone from the list; invite-only ones give out a six-character code. The founder can remove a member, hand the company over, change the flag or the home port, or disband.

Home port. The founder's own at founding, movable once a fortnight. A member's landed voyage that leaves from or arrives at it pays 5% more.

Contracts. Three a fortnight, drawn for the company and sized to its crew: land so many cargo runs, so many tonnes of fish, so many patrol shifts, so many kilometres. Progress comes from what members actually land. A completed contract pays every member $3,000 and raises the company's standing by one.

Standing. Levels at 3, 10, 25, 50 contracts completed; each level adds 1% to every member's landed voyage. It cannot be bought.

Company mates never appear on each other's prey lists, and the chart shows them in gold.
