Batumi
Georgia · Black Sea
The harbour
Batumi lies on the southeastern Black Sea coast of Georgia, close to the Turkish border, in the region of Adjara. In the late nineteenth century it became an oil port, shipping crude and kerosene brought by rail and pipeline from Baku, and oil products remain an important cargo today.
The port also handles general cargo, containers, ferries and cruise calls, while the city has grown into a seaside resort with a striking modern skyline. Sailors notice the green, often cloud-capped mountains rising close behind the shore and the frequent rain of its humid subtropical climate.
