The harbour
Trabzon lies on the south-eastern shore of the Black Sea in north-east Türkiye. Known in antiquity as Trapezus, it was later the capital of the Byzantine Empire of Trebizond and for centuries a terminus of caravan routes linking the Black Sea with Persia.
The port handles general cargo, including goods in transit to Iran and the Caucasus, and the region is known for hazelnuts, tea grown further east and Black Sea anchovy, or hamsi. The Sumela Monastery stands on a cliff in the mountains inland. Sailors see the steep, green Pontic Mountains rising almost directly from the shore behind the city.
