The harbour
Odesa lies on the northwestern coast of the Black Sea and is Ukraine's largest seaport.
Founded by order of Catherine the Great in the 1790s, it grew rich exporting grain from the steppes and became a cosmopolitan trading city. The broad Potemkin Stairs lead down from the city to the harbour; their name recalls the 1905 mutiny on the battleship Potemkin. The port handles grain, containers and general cargo, and since 2022 it has worked under wartime conditions.
A sailor sees the city on low cliffs above the bay, with the elegant opera house among its landmarks.
