Burgas
Bulgaria · Black Sea
The harbour
Burgas stands at the head of the Gulf of Burgas on the western shore of the Black Sea, Bulgaria's largest bay. Its port is the country's biggest, handling bulk goods, containers, general cargo and especially oil, with a large refinery on the city's outskirts linked to an offshore oil terminal.
The city is surrounded by coastal lakes and wetlands that are important for migrating birds, and it serves as a gateway to the resorts of the southern Bulgarian coast. Sailors notice the small island of St Anastasia in the gulf, with its old monastery and lighthouse.
