The harbour
Istanbul straddles the Bosporus, the strait linking the Black Sea with the Sea of Marmara and dividing Europe from Asia. As Byzantium and then Constantinople it was the capital of the Byzantine and Ottoman empires, with the Golden Horn as its sheltered harbour.
Today container terminals such as Ambarlı lie on the Marmara shore, cruise ships berth at Galataport, and ferries cross the strait constantly. Tankers and bulk carriers from the Black Sea pass through the city under the Montreux Convention.
Sailors must handle the strong surface current, sharp bends and dense crossing traffic of the Bosporus.
