The harbour
İzmir lies at the head of the long Gulf of İzmir on Turkey's Aegean coast.
As ancient Smyrna it was one of the great cities of the Greek and Roman world, and for centuries it was the main trading port of western Anatolia, exporting figs, raisins, tobacco and cotton. Today the port at Alsancak and nearby terminals handle containers and general cargo, cruise ships call, and ferries cross the gulf.
The seafront promenade, the Kordon, lines the waterfront. In summer a sailor can rely on the imbat, a steady afternoon sea breeze blowing up the gulf.
