The harbour
Antalya stands on the Gulf of Antalya on Turkey's Mediterranean coast, backed by the high Taurus Mountains.
Founded in the second century BC by Attalus II of Pergamon as Attaleia, it kept its small walled harbour below the old quarter of Kaleiçi, now used by tour boats and yachts. Commercial shipping uses Port Akdeniz west of the city, which handles cruise ships, general cargo, minerals and marble.
The region lives largely from tourism and greenhouse farming. From the sea, the cliffs of the city front and the snow-capped mountains behind are the first thing a sailor sees.
