The harbour
Limassol lies on Akrotiri Bay on the south coast of Cyprus, in the eastern Mediterranean.
It is the island's main port, handling containers, general cargo and cruise ships, and it has become a major centre for international ship management companies. Its history is long: Richard the Lionheart married Berengaria of Navarre here in 1191 during the Third Crusade, and the medieval castle still stands near the old harbour. The area is also known for its wine.
To the southwest lies the Akrotiri peninsula, with a British military base and a salt lake where flamingos gather in winter.
