The harbour
Haifa lies on the Mediterranean at the southern end of Haifa Bay, beneath the slopes of Mount Carmel. It is Israel's largest port and home to the main base of the Israeli Navy.
The port handles containers, bulk cargo and cruise passengers, and the bay is lined with refineries and heavy industry. The modern harbour was built during the British Mandate in the 1930s.
From the sea, sailors see the Bahá'í Gardens, a staircase of terraced gardens climbing the side of Mount Carmel to the golden-domed Shrine of the Báb.
