The harbour
Latakia is Syria's principal seaport, on the eastern Mediterranean coast north of Lebanon.
The city stands on the site of ancient Laodicea, and the ruins of Ugarit, where one of the earliest alphabets was found, lie just to the north. The port handles containers, grain and general cargo, serving much of Syria's foreign trade. The surrounding region is known for its tobacco, which gave its name to a distinctive smoked pipe tobacco.
Behind the coastal plain rise the green coastal mountains. Years of conflict have affected trade, so a sailor may find conditions and port activity changing.
