The harbour
Ashdod sits on Israel's southern Mediterranean coast, about halfway between Tel Aviv and Gaza. Its harbour, opened in the 1960s, is entirely man-made, protected by long breakwaters built out from a straight sandy shoreline with no natural shelter.
Together with Haifa it is one of Israel's two main cargo ports, handling containers, vehicles, bulk goods and general cargo for the centre and south of the country. The city itself carries the name of an ancient Philistine town nearby. Sailors notice the flat, sandy coast and the strong westerly seas that can build against the breakwaters in winter.
