The harbour

Beirut, the capital of Lebanon, occupies a headland on the eastern Mediterranean coast. A port has existed here since Phoenician times, and the modern harbour is the country's main gateway for imported goods, containers and grain.

In August 2020 a huge explosion of stored ammonium nitrate devastated the port and surrounding districts, destroying the large grain silos that had stood on the quay; the damaged silos remain a stark landmark. The port has since resumed much of its cargo work. From the sea, the city appears backed by the steep slopes of Mount Lebanon, whose higher ridges carry snow through much of the winter.
