The harbour
Mersin lies on Türkiye's southern Mediterranean coast, on the edge of the fertile Çukurova plain in the historic region of Cilicia. It grew rapidly as a port from the nineteenth century, shipping cotton and farm produce from the plain behind it.
Today it is one of the country's largest ports, handling containers, general cargo, citrus fruit and other agricultural exports, as well as transit cargo for the Middle East, and it has a large free trade zone. Sailors notice the hot, humid summers and the high Taurus Mountains rising behind the coastal plain, often snow-capped into spring.
