Port Said
Egypt · Red Sea & Suez
The harbour
Port Said stands at the northern entrance of the Suez Canal, on the Mediterranean coast of Egypt. The city was founded in 1859 when work on the canal began, and it grew around the waterway, with the town of Port Fuad facing it across the channel.
It is a major transit point where ships assemble into convoys for the canal, and East Port Said has a large container transshipment terminal. The port also handles bunkering, ship supplies and general cargo. Sailors notice the green-domed Suez Canal Authority building on the waterfront and the long lines of ships waiting at anchor offshore.
