The harbour
Alexandria lies on the Mediterranean at the western edge of the Nile Delta. Founded by Alexander the Great in the fourth century BC, it became the capital of Ptolemaic Egypt and the home of the famous Pharos lighthouse and the ancient library.
Today it is Egypt's principal seaport, handling containers, grain, general cargo and passengers, with its Western Harbour and the nearby Dekheila port carrying most commercial traffic. The old Eastern Harbour, curving along the Corniche, is lined with fishing boats. Sailors notice the Qaitbay Citadel at its entrance, built on the site of the vanished lighthouse.
