The harbour
Heraklion is the largest city and main port of Crete, on the island's north coast facing the Sea of Crete in the southern Aegean. The harbour was fortified by the Venetians, whose sea fortress, known as Koules, still guards the entrance to the old port.
The port handles overnight ferries to Piraeus and other Greek islands, cruise ships and general cargo, and serves visitors heading to the Minoan palace of Knossos just south of the city. Sailors notice the strong northerly meltemi winds of summer, which can raise steep seas, and the high mountains of Crete rising behind the town.
