The harbour
Patras lies on the Gulf of Patras in the northwestern Peloponnese, at the western entrance to the Gulf of Corinth.
It is Greece's main western gateway to Italy, with regular car ferries to Ancona, Bari, Brindisi and Venice, and it also handles general cargo. The city is known for its large carnival and for the Cathedral of Saint Andrew, the apostle who is said to have been martyred here.
Just northeast of the city, the long cable-stayed Rio–Antirrio Bridge spans the narrow strait, and every sailor heading into the Gulf of Corinth passes beneath it.
