The harbour
Durrës is Albania's largest port, on the Adriatic coast west of Tirana. Founded by Greek colonists as Epidamnos and later known to the Romans as Dyrrachium, it was the western starting point of the Via Egnatia, the Roman road to Constantinople.
Today the port handles most of Albania's container and general cargo, and passenger ferries link it with the Italian ports of Bari and Ancona. A Roman amphitheatre survives in the town centre.
Sailors approaching see a long, low sandy beach lined with hotels stretching south of the harbour along the bay.
