The harbour
Bari is the capital of Apulia on the Adriatic coast of southern Italy. Its port is one of the main ferry links between Italy and the Balkans, with regular sailings to Albania, Montenegro and Greece, and it also receives cruise ships and general cargo.
The city is famous for the Basilica of San Nicola, which holds relics of Saint Nicholas brought by Bari sailors from Myra in Asia Minor in 1087, making it a place of pilgrimage for both Catholic and Orthodox visitors.
From the sea, sailors see the old town, Bari Vecchia, packed onto a small peninsula between the old and new harbours.
