Rijeka

The harbour

Rijeka is Croatia's largest port, on the Kvarner Gulf in the northern Adriatic. Mountains drop steeply to the sea here, and the deep water allows large ships to come close to shore. The port handles containers and bulk goods, serving both Croatia and Central European countries such as Hungary.

Under the name Fiume, the city was long contested and changed hands several times in the twentieth century. It has a long shipbuilding tradition, and the self-propelled torpedo was first developed here in the nineteenth century. Sailors in the Kvarner Gulf must watch for the bora, a cold, sudden north-easterly wind that sweeps down from the mountains.
