The harbour
Venice is built on islands in a shallow lagoon at the head of the Adriatic Sea, in northeastern Italy. For centuries it was a powerful maritime republic, and its Arsenale was one of the largest shipyards of the medieval world. The city and its lagoon are a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The modern port handles ferries, cargo and cruise traffic, with industrial terminals at Porto Marghera on the mainland; large cruise ships no longer pass through the Giudecca Canal past St Mark's. Sailors notice the lagoon's narrow marked channels, the tides that can cause flooding, and the mobile flood barriers at the lagoon inlets.
