The harbour
Taranto lies on the Gulf of Taranto, an inlet of the Ionian Sea in the instep of southern Italy. Founded by Spartan colonists as Taras, it was one of the leading cities of Magna Graecia. The city sits between two bodies of water, the open Mar Grande and the enclosed lagoon of the Mar Piccolo.
Taranto is a main base of the Italian Navy and has a large steelworks and an industrial port handling bulk and containers. In 1940 British carrier aircraft attacked the Italian fleet in the harbour. Sailors entering the Mar Piccolo pass through a narrow canal beneath the Ponte Girevole, a swing bridge that opens for ships.
