The harbour

Catania lies on the east coast of Sicily, facing the Ionian Sea at the foot of Mount Etna, Europe's highest active volcano. The city has been destroyed by eruptions and earthquakes, and after the great earthquake of 1693 it was rebuilt in a Baroque style using dark volcanic stone. Its historic centre is part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The port handles ferries and ro-ro traffic to the Italian mainland, containers, general cargo and cruise ships. Sailors approaching Catania usually see Etna's broad summit, often trailing smoke or capped with snow, rising behind the city.
