The harbour
Sfax is Tunisia's second city, on the north shore of the Gulf of Gabès in the Mediterranean. It is a commercial and industrial centre known for exporting olive oil from the vast olive groves around it, as well as phosphates and their products, and it has a large fishing fleet.
The city keeps a well-preserved walled medina close to the port. Ferries run from Sfax to the nearby Kerkennah Islands. The Gulf of Gabès is unusually shallow, and it has the largest tides in the Mediterranean, so sailors here must pay more attention to the tide and to the shoals than in most Mediterranean ports.
