The harbour
Tunis, the capital of Tunisia, sits beside the Lake of Tunis, a shallow lagoon connected to the Gulf of Tunis on the Mediterranean. A canal crosses the lake to the city, but most traffic uses the outer ports of La Goulette and Radès on the coast.
La Goulette handles passenger ferries to France and Italy and cruise ships, while Radès handles containers and general cargo. The ruins of ancient Carthage and the whitewashed village of Sidi Bou Said lie just along the shore. Sailors notice the hills of Cape Bon on the eastern side of the gulf and the shallow, flamingo-dotted lagoons.
