The harbour
Naples lies on the Gulf of Naples, an inlet of the Tyrrhenian Sea on Italy's southwest coast. Founded by Greek colonists as Neapolis, it has been one of the Mediterranean's major cities for over two thousand years, and its historic centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The port is extremely busy with passengers, running ferries and fast boats to Capri, Ischia and Procida, and longer routes to Sicily and Sardinia, as well as cruise ships, containers and general cargo. Sailors arriving in the gulf see Mount Vesuvius rising over the bay and the medieval Castel Nuovo near the passenger terminal.
