The harbour
Genoa lies at the head of the Gulf of Genoa on the Ligurian Sea, in north-west Italy. It is one of Italy's busiest ports, handling containers, oil and passengers, with ferries to Sardinia, Corsica, Sicily and North Africa and a large cruise trade.
In the Middle Ages the Republic of Genoa was a great maritime power and a rival of Venice, with trading posts across the Mediterranean and Black Sea; Christopher Columbus was born here. The city is squeezed between steep mountains and the sea. Its old lighthouse, the Lanterna, one of the oldest working lighthouses in the world, still guides ships into the harbour.
