The harbour

Barcelona, the capital of Catalonia, sits on Spain's Mediterranean coast between the hill of Montjuïc and the mouth of the Besòs River. Its port is one of the busiest in the Mediterranean for containers and is among Europe's leading cruise ports, with ferries running to the Balearic Islands, Italy and North Africa.

The old harbour, Port Vell, was redeveloped into marinas and promenades, and the Columbus monument stands where La Rambla meets the waterfront. The city has been a trading port since Roman and medieval times. Sailors approaching from the south see Montjuïc and its fortress rising directly above the container terminals and cruise quays.
