The harbour
Oran is Algeria's second city, on the Mediterranean coast in the north-west of the country. Over the centuries it was ruled by Spain, the Ottomans and France, and it is known as the home of raï music and as the setting of Albert Camus's novel The Plague.
The port handles general cargo, containers and grain, and passenger ferries link Oran with Spain and France. The harbour lies at the foot of steep ground, and the mountain of Murdjadjo rises to the west. Sailors see the Santa Cruz fort and its chapel on the summit, standing high above the bay.
