The harbour
Tangier sits on the northern tip of Morocco at the western entrance to the Strait of Gibraltar, where the Atlantic meets the Mediterranean.
For centuries it was a prize for rival powers, and from the 1920s to 1956 it was an international zone with a cosmopolitan reputation; the traveller Ibn Battuta was born here. The old city port now serves ferries, a marina and cruise ships, while the large Tanger Med port to the east is one of the biggest container hubs in the Mediterranean.
On a clear day a sailor can see the coast of Spain across the strait.
