The harbour
Lisbon stands on the north bank of the Tagus estuary, near where the river opens into the Atlantic. In the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries it was the base for Portugal's voyages of discovery; Vasco da Gama sailed from nearby Belém for India in 1497.
Much of the city was destroyed by the earthquake and tsunami of 1755. Today the port handles containers, grain and many cruise ships, and ferries cross the river constantly.
Sailors pass the Belém Tower, then sail under the long red 25 de Abril suspension bridge, watched by the Cristo Rei statue on the southern bank.
