The harbour
Málaga lies on Spain's southern Mediterranean coast, in Andalusia, at the centre of the Costa del Sol. Founded by the Phoenicians, it later flourished under Moorish rule, and the Alcazaba fortress and Gibralfaro castle still stand on the hill above the harbour. The painter Pablo Picasso was born here.
The port is an important cruise destination and has regular ferry links to the Spanish city of Melilla in North Africa, as well as handling some cargo. The old harbour was redeveloped with a waterfront promenade. Sailors approaching from the sea see Gibralfaro on its hill and La Farola, the city's old lighthouse on the harbour wall.
