The harbour
Cádiz sits on a narrow spit of land in the Bay of Cádiz, on Spain's Atlantic coast near the Strait of Gibraltar. Founded by the Phoenicians as Gadir, it is often described as the oldest continuously inhabited city in western Europe. In the eighteenth century it became Spain's main port for trade with the Americas, and Spain's first constitution was proclaimed here in 1812.
The port today handles cruise ships, ferries to the Canary Islands and general cargo, and the bay has long been home to shipyards. From the sea, the city looks almost surrounded by water, with the golden dome of its cathedral standing out.
