The harbour
Casablanca lies on Morocco's Atlantic coast and is the country's largest city and commercial centre. Its large artificial harbour, protected by long breakwaters, was developed during the French protectorate in the early twentieth century.
The port handles containers, general cargo and phosphate products, Morocco's leading mineral export, as well as fishing and some cruise traffic. The city became world-famous through the 1942 film named after it.
Sailors see the Hassan II Mosque, built partly on a platform over the sea, with one of the tallest minarets in the world standing out as a landmark from far offshore.
