The harbour
Algeciras lies on the western shore of the Bay of Algeciras, at the Atlantic entrance to the Strait of Gibraltar, with the Rock of Gibraltar directly across the water.
It is one of the busiest container ports in the Mediterranean, built largely on transshipment: big ocean carriers exchange boxes here with feeder ships serving Europe and Africa. Frequent ferries also cross to Tangier Med and to the Spanish enclave of Ceuta, and traffic peaks in summer as North African families travel home.
A sailor notices the strait's strong currents and the alternating Levante and Poniente winds that funnel through it.
