The harbour
The port of Leixões lies at Matosinhos, just north of Porto at the mouth of the River Leça. It is an artificial harbour enclosed by breakwaters on the Atlantic coast and is the main port of northern Portugal.
It handles containers, bulk goods and oil products, and its modern cruise terminal brings visitors to Porto. Matosinhos has a long tradition of sardine fishing and canning and is known for its grilled fish restaurants near the harbour.
Sailors approaching notice the heavy Atlantic swell breaking along the coast, and the sudden calm once inside the shelter of the breakwaters.
