The harbour
Bilbao lies in the Basque Country of northern Spain, on the estuary of the Nervión River where it opens into the Bay of Biscay. The city grew rich on iron ore, steelmaking and shipbuilding, and its port has moved steadily downriver to deep-water terminals in the outer harbour.
It handles containers, oil and gas, steel and bulk cargoes, as well as ferries to Britain and cruise ships. Sailors entering the estuary pass the Vizcaya Bridge at Portugalete, the world's oldest transporter bridge and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, whose gondola still carries people and cars across the river.
