The harbour
Southampton lies at the head of Southampton Water, an estuary opening onto the Solent and sheltered by the Isle of Wight. It is Britain's main cruise port and also handles containers and large numbers of exported cars.
The Pilgrims' Mayflower first set out from here in 1620, and the Titanic sailed from Southampton on her maiden voyage in 1912. For decades it was the home of the great transatlantic liners.
Sailors benefit from the area's unusual double high tide, which keeps water levels high for longer. They pass the big Fawley oil refinery on the western shore of Southampton Water.
