The harbour
Dunkirk (Dunkerque) is France's northernmost port, on the North Sea coast near the Belgian border and the eastern approach to the Strait of Dover.
It is best remembered for the 1940 evacuation, when hundreds of thousands of Allied soldiers were taken off its beaches and harbour. Today the port handles iron ore and coal for a large steelworks, containers, liquefied natural gas and regular ferries to Dover.
The approaches are tricky: a series of long sandbanks runs parallel to the coast, and a sailor must follow buoyed channels between them to reach the harbour.
