Zeebrugge
Belgium · North Sea & Baltic
The harbour
Zeebrugge lies on the Belgian coast of the North Sea, connected by canal to the historic city of Bruges, which it serves as a seaport. Its harbour is protected by long breakwaters built out into the shallow sea.
The port is one of Europe's major hubs for importing and exporting cars, and also handles roll-on/roll-off ferries to Britain, containers and liquefied natural gas. In 1918, during the First World War, the British raided the port to block German submarines. Sailors notice the flat coastline, the shifting sandbanks of the southern North Sea and the large car terminals packed with vehicles.
