The harbour
Rotterdam lies in the delta of the Rhine and Meuse rivers on the Dutch North Sea coast. It is the largest port in Europe, stretching for kilometres from the city to the Maasvlakte, a vast area of land reclaimed from the sea. It handles containers, crude oil and refined products, coal, ore and chemicals.
Barges carry cargo inland along the Rhine to Germany and beyond. The old city centre was destroyed by bombing in 1940 and rebuilt in a modern style, with the Erasmus Bridge as a landmark. Ships enter by the Nieuwe Waterweg, where sailors meet a constant stream of river barges, tugs and seagoing vessels.
