The harbour
Bremerhaven lies at the mouth of the River Weser on Germany's North Sea coast. Founded in the nineteenth century as an outer harbour for the city of Bremen, it remains part of the state of Bremen. Its container terminal stretches in an unbroken line of quays along the Weser, and it is one of Europe's largest ports for shipping cars.
For generations Bremerhaven was a major departure point for emigrants to the Americas, a story told at the German Emigration Center, and it is also home to the German Maritime Museum. Sailors must reckon with strong tidal streams and shifting sands in the Weser approaches.
