The harbour
Copenhagen, Denmark's capital, sits on the Øresund, the strait between the Danish island of Zealand and Sweden that connects the Baltic to the Kattegat and North Sea.
The city's name means 'merchants' harbour'. Its port today is chiefly a cruise and ferry port, with an overnight ferry to Oslo, while the Øresund Bridge carries road and rail traffic to Malmö. The colourful canal-side houses of Nyhavn and the Little Mermaid statue are its best-known waterfront sights.
Arriving from the north, a sailor passes the old sea fort of Trekroner at the harbour entrance.
