The harbour

Gothenburg lies on Sweden's west coast at the mouth of the Göta älv river, facing the Kattegat. Founded in the early seventeenth century under King Gustavus Adolphus, it became home to the Swedish East India Company and grew into the country's main gateway to the Atlantic.

It is the largest port in Scandinavia, handling containers, cars, oil and roll-on/roll-off cargo, with regular ferries to Denmark and Germany. The city is also the home of Volvo. Sailors approaching it thread through a rocky archipelago of low, bare granite islands and skerries before reaching the river mouth.
