The harbour
Bergen lies on Norway's west coast, sheltered behind islands and surrounded by steep mountains. For centuries it was the country's main trading city, and the Hanseatic League kept an office on the Bryggen wharf, whose wooden warehouses are now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The stockfish trade from northern Norway once passed through here. Today the port handles cruise ships, fishing vessels, supply ships for offshore oil and gas fields, and the coastal Hurtigruten ferries that start their northbound voyages here.
Sailors entering Vågen harbour soon notice that Bergen is one of the rainiest cities in Europe.
