The harbour
Aberdeen sits on Scotland's north-east coast where the River Dee meets the North Sea. Known as the Granite City for its grey stone buildings, it has been the main base of the British offshore oil and gas industry since the 1970s, and its harbour is busy with brightly painted supply and standby vessels serving the platforms.
The harbour authority is among the oldest recorded businesses in Britain, and ferries run from here to Orkney and Shetland. A newer harbour has been built in Nigg Bay to the south. Sailors entering the narrow channel between the piers often see bottlenose dolphins feeding at the harbour mouth.
