The harbour
Hamburg lies on the Elbe River roughly 100 kilometres from the North Sea, and is Germany's largest port and one of the busiest in Europe. A leading member of the medieval Hanseatic League, it has been a major trading city for centuries.
The port handles huge volumes of containers, along with bulk cargo, oil and cruise passengers. The red-brick Speicherstadt warehouse district is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the Elbphilharmonie concert hall rises over the harbour. Ships must time the river passage with the tides, and at Wedel the Willkomm-Höft station greets passing vessels with their national anthem.
