The harbour
Rostock lies on the Warnow River near Germany's Baltic coast, with its seaside district of Warnemünde at the river mouth.
A former Hanseatic city, it has a long history of trade and shipbuilding. Its port is a major ferry hub with routes to Denmark, Sweden and Finland, and it also handles bulk and general cargo. Warnemünde is one of Germany's busiest cruise ports, often used as a gateway for trips to Berlin.
Entering the harbour, a sailor passes the white Warnemünde lighthouse and the curved-roofed Teepott building on the promenade, with sandy beaches on either side.
