The harbour
Kaliningrad is the main city of a Russian exclave on the Baltic coast, between Poland and Lithuania. Until 1945 it was the German city of Königsberg, capital of East Prussia and home of the philosopher Immanuel Kant.
The city lies on the Pregolya River, inland from the Vistula Lagoon. Seagoing ships reach it through a long dredged canal across the lagoon from Baltiysk, which guards the lagoon entrance and is a base of the Russian Baltic Fleet. The port handles general cargo, containers and ferries.
A sailor notices the narrow, low-lying channel and the sheltered lagoon waters on either side.
